On Thursday, September 24 at 9:20 AM, EBS '17th Lecture – Art Edition' will be broadcast. This program explores how to understand masterpieces, which can feel difficult, from a child's perspective and how to discover and appreciate the characteristics within the works.

Art is seen as much as you know; AI lowers the threshold for art appreciation

Artworks can feel difficult even for adult viewers if they are not well-versed in the historical background or expression techniques. Recently, AI has been drawing attention as a tool to lower this threshold of appreciation. A domestic study analyzing 4,410 AI chatbot user utterances collected from two special exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea in 2025 showed that 85.1% of the total motivation for use was to obtain information necessary for the works or exhibitions. Social interaction was only 8.8%, novelty/curiosity was 5.4%, and entertainment was a mere 0.7%, showing that viewers are utilizing AI chatbots as information search tools to understand works and exhibitions rather than for simple fun.

Positive changes have also been confirmed in classes targeting children and adolescents. In a domestic study conducted on 63 students in grades 5–6 of elementary school and grade 1 of middle school in 2026, it was found that students expanded their appreciation toward interpreting works based on formative elements such as color and shape, and the burden of difficult art terminology decreased. The ability to explore works independently also improved significantly. In this way, AI can serve as a learning tool for children to listen to difficult explanations tailored to their level and immediately ask questions, helping them appreciate masterpieces more easily and actively.

In this 17th Lecture 'Art' edition, familiar works such as those by Vincent van Gogh and Kim Hong-do will be appreciated with AI. By showing images of the works to the AI and requesting explanations at a level and length easy for children to understand, the program explores how to transform difficult and long artwork descriptions into versions suitable for a child's level.

Participants will also directly create a 'customized AI chatbot' that can apply a decided explanation method to various works. They will also learn how to show a painting in front of them to the AI using a mobile phone or tablet PC camera and ask questions immediately. Following this, they will directly find expressive characteristics such as color and brushstrokes in masterpieces and apply them to their own photos or drawings, expanding the art experience from appreciation to creation.

Growing the 'power to see paintings' with a current elementary school teacher

In this lecture, current elementary school teacher Kang Gyeong-uk will appear to introduce art appreciation methods using AI based on his experience teaching children in actual classrooms. Teacher Kang Gyeong-uk emphasizes that it is important not to stop at immediately checking the name of the work or information about the painter, but to first look at the painting in detail, find noticeable expressions themselves, and try to explain them in their own words.

Art terminology or long artwork descriptions that are unfamiliar to elementary school students can be converted into easy-to-understand language using AI. In this process, AI does not act as an entity that provides the correct answer about the work, but rather plays the role of an 'AI Art Teacher' that helps children observe the painting more closely and continue asking questions themselves. Through this, by finding new characteristics in familiar masterpieces and expressing them in their own language, they can develop the strength to look at and interpret works independently.
