The warning of the 'Glacier Tsunami' from 12 years ago becomes reality in 2026

Twelve years ago, the EBS production team broadcast an episode of titled 'Himalayan Catastrophe, Glacier Tsunami,' which tracked glacier lakes growing in size due to rising temperatures in the Himalayas and warned of the possibility of large-scale disasters.

And on August 26, 2026, massive glaciers and rocks collapsed in the Himalayas on the border of Nepal and Tibet. A catastrophe occurred as debris flows and floods swept through villages, resulting in more than 7,000 deaths and missing persons. The 'future risk' recorded by EBS 12 years ago has returned as a real-world disaster.

Through this climate change special , EBS looks back at the changes over the 12 years since the 2014 broadcast. PD Choi Pyeong-sun, who covered the Himalayas at the time, and Dr. Lee Won-sang from the Korea Polar Research Institute will appear to discuss how the climate crisis is changing the Earth and our lives, hosted by reporter Lee Hye-jung.

'Glacier Lake Outburst' to 'Mountain Collapse'... an escalating climate crisis

Dr. Lee Won-sang diagnoses that while 'glacier lake outbursts' were the main risk 12 years ago, it has now expanded into a 'complex disaster' where glaciers and rocks collapse simultaneously, causing the mountains themselves to collapse.

Since the Industrial Revolution, the Earth's average temperature has risen by about 1.4°C, and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have exceeded 420ppm. The broadcast shows that changes in glaciers, oceans, weather, and life are not separate issues but are interconnected within a single 'Earth system.'

From the Himalayas to our weather... the climate crisis has already become 'daily life'

The crisis in the Himalayas is no longer a story from a distant place. According to long-term meteorological observation data in South Korea, the summer in South Korea has become 25 days longer than 100 years ago, and winter has become 22 days shorter. Heatwaves and tropical nights have increased, and heavy rains exceeding 100mm per hour are occurring repeatedly.

Dr. Lee Won-sang says regarding the current situation, where changes once imagined only in science fiction movies have become reality, "It is not science fiction; it has already come to our daily lives." PD Choi Pyeong-sun also emphasizes that we have entered an era where the climate crisis is felt as 'weather,' and that climate change continues not only when large-scale disasters make the news but also at moments when we do not pay attention.

2046, what will the Earth look like for our children?

Finally, the broadcast looks ahead 20 years to 2046, when a child born now will become an adult.

It contemplates how to prepare for the already unavoidable changes and what can be changed now to prevent even greater crises.

We faced the future that the EBS camera recorded in the Himalayas in 2014 as a reality in 2026. Now, the camera turns toward 20 years later again. What will the Earth look like in 2046, when our children live? The face of that future is not yet decided. Perhaps the most important time is right now.
