Lee Seung Gi wins partial victory in lawsuit against former agency over music revenue settlement

Singer and actor Lee Seung Gi has won a lawsuit regarding the settlement of music revenue generated after the termination of his contract with his former agency, Hook Entertainment. According to legal circles on the 5th, the 20th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled on the 28th of last month that out of the approximately 830 million won claimed in the lawsuit filed by Lee Seung Gi, 690 million won must be paid.

The core of this trial was whether there was an obligation to settle profits generated after the termination of the exclusive contract. The court ruled that even if there is no separate agreement after the contract ends, a settlement must be made if profits are generated. Furthermore, the court held that the responsibility for the contract termination lies with the agency and pointed out that it is unfair for the party that failed to fulfill the contract to take more of the profits.

Considering industry practices, the settlement ratio was calculated to give Lee Seung Gi 60% of the sales up to August 2024, and 40% of the sales thereafter. Previously, Lee Seung Gi had notified the termination of his contract while raising issues regarding the non-settlement of music revenue over 18 years, and last year, he also received a ruling through a separate lawsuit to be paid an additional 581 million won.
