EBS Episode 102, 'Architecture, how high can we go?', will be broadcast on EBS 1TV on Friday, September 25, at 10:50 PM. In this episode, MC Defconn, Professor Jang Hong-je from the Department of Chemistry at Kwangwoon University, science communicator Hangseong, and Professor Woo Choong-wan from the Department of Global Biomedical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University meet Professor Choi Gyeong-gyu from the School of Architecture at Soongsil University to examine the architectural science that made super-tall buildings possible.
Lotte World Tower, standing 555m tall with 123 floors, weighs a staggering 750,000 tons. For such a massive structure to stand tall in the sky, there have been numerous advancements in architectural technology. Then, how high can humans go?! To the ambitious question posed by Defconn, Professor Choi Gyeong-gyu provides an unimaginable answer: '1,000 floors.' The human challenge toward taller and safer buildings and the development of architectural technology contained within it unfold interestingly.
A special experiment comparing the shaking of buildings with different heights will also be revealed. As the attention of Defconn and the scientists focuses on the experimental results that differ from expectations, various seismic design technologies for responding to earthquakes are unveiled. Furthermore, the science hidden in the shapes of buildings—which we often think are just beautiful—is revealed, including super-tall buildings that have acquired unique exteriors specifically to withstand the force of the wind.
Meanwhile, Professor Choi Gyeong-gyu is researching 'column-free space,' which creates wide spaces without pillars. From new architecture that creates massive spaces of over 200m using wood to the principle of air pressure that supports the massive roof of the Tokyo Dome! Where will the new possibilities of architecture, which have been expanding limits, continue to lead? This amazing story can be confirmed through the broadcast.
