Jung Young-joo Appointed as Inaugural Chairperson... Korea Musical Actors Association Officially Launches

The Korea Musical Actors Association, which aims to protect the rights and improve the welfare of musical actors, held its inaugural general meeting on August 17 and began its full-scale activities. Actor Jung Young-joo was appointed as the inaugural chairperson, and the board of directors includes Lee Gun-myung, Song Yong-jin, Kim A-sun, Yang Joon-mo, and Kim A-young, while Ahn Yu-jin will serve as auditor to lead the association.

A large number of actors representing the musical industry participated as founders to lend strength to this launch. A total of 80 actors, including Nam Kyung-eup, Jeon Soo-kyung, Shin Sung-woo, Ahn Jae-wook, Park Ho-san, Kim Sun-young, Lina, and Son Seung-yeon, were listed as founders. Additionally, many actors such as Choi Jung-won, Jung Sung-hwa, Shin Young-sook, Um Ki-joon, Kim So-hyun, Son Jun-ho, Min Woo-hyuk, Jeon Mi Do, Hong Kwang-ho, and Kim Junsu expressed their intention to join, agreeing with the purpose of establishing the association.

The association was born from the awareness that despite the rapid growth of the musical industry, there is a lack of institutional mechanisms to resolve field grievances such as breach of contract, unpaid performance fees, and safety issues during performances that actors face. The association plans to respond at an organizational level to contract and career management issues that actors previously had to handle alone, and to promote the accumulation of data and legal support for the spread of standard contract culture and institutional improvement.

Regarding the launch of the association, Chairperson Jung Young-joo emphasized, “While all problems will not be solved overnight, it is important that a channel has been established where actors can talk together about the concerns they used to carry alone.” She added, “We will create an environment where all musical actors can voice their opinions without distinction between seniors and juniors, or leads and ensembles. Since production companies and actors are partners, we will establish a foundation so that they can be fairly protected and stand on stage for a long time.”

Meanwhile, on the day of the inaugural general meeting, the association signed an MOU for industry-academic cooperation with Jeonghwa Arts College. Both institutions agreed to cooperate in areas such as actor education, field training, and joint planning and production of content in the future. The association plans to finalize the approval process for establishing an incorporated association and carry out its business in earnest.
