In EBS Lecture 15, which will be broadcast on Thursday, September 10 at 9:20 AM, an AI study method is introduced that transforms English video content that children enjoy into their own English vocabulary learning materials.

The beginning of English proficiency is 'vocabulary'; why is the elementary period important?

The foundation of English study is 'words.' This is because basic vocabulary must support reading, listening to English sentences, and expressing one's own thoughts. The currently applied '2022 Revised English Curriculum' recommends using 800 out of the 3,000 basic English words in elementary school.

Actual research has also confirmed that English vocabulary has a significant impact on listening and reading comprehension. A study conducted on elementary English learners in 2022 showed that English vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension scores were closely related, and that factors related to vocabulary knowledge explained about 75% of the difference in listening ability. Also, a study of 206 students in grades 4 to 6 in elementary school showed that vocabulary plays an important role in reading English texts and understanding the content. Ultimately, knowing words well leads to the power to listen to and read English for comprehension.

In this regard, what is important is 'how to learn' rather than 'how many words to memorize.' Everyone is familiar with the experience of opening a vocabulary book to repeatedly memorize meanings, only to have the memory fade after a few days. What if children discover words directly within the English videos they enjoy and study by connecting the meanings and usages of those words?

In Lecture 15, students will learn how to utilize English videos they enjoy as learning materials. After showing the video to the AI and requesting it to select core English words that would be good for elementary students to learn, they will examine the Korean meanings, English definitions, and example sentences showing how they are used in actual sentences. This method goes beyond simply pairing words with meanings; it is a way to understand the meaning and usage of words through the scenes and context within the video.

If the words initially selected by the AI are too easy or too difficult, they can be readjusted to suit one's level. By giving specific conditions such as "Pick slightly more difficult words" or "Tell me words that are good for a 5th grader to study," the necessary word list can be readjusted. Subsequently, based on the learned words, they will challenge themselves to create word cards and quizzes, and even produce a 'vocabulary learning app' that can be tapped to learn repeatedly.

In this lecture, EBS English instructor Kim Ji-won will introduce English vocabulary learning methods using AI together with broadcaster Heo Sung-beom. Rather than blindly memorizing English words, they will demonstrate a method of learning through a process of directly finding words in content they like, checking meanings and context, and encountering them repeatedly in various ways.

In particular, in this class, AI does not act as a tool that tells the words and answers instead, but serves as an 'English study partner' that helps children select the words they need and practice by changing their study methods. The process itself—where children directly choose what content to study with, judge what level of words is needed, and create quizzes and learning tools from what they have learned—becomes the learning.
