Jazz violinist Son Moeun, who is active based in Paris, France, and her band 'MOEUN' will appear on EBS FM 'Wednesday Guest'. Son Moeun, who became the first Korean to win the Musician Award at the 2024 La Défense Jazz Competition in France, will share stories ranging from the motivation for expanding her musical scope from classical violin to jazz, her time living as a musician in France, and her daily life and music in Paris during this broadcast.
Influenced by her grandfather, who was a founding member of the Daegu Symphony Orchestra, Son Moeun studied classical violin from a young age. Later, she expanded her musical territory by studying classical violin alongside jazz and improvisation in France. Currently, she teaches violin at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Limoges and the Swing Roman Academy, while also being active as a performer and composer.
In particular, she gained recognition for her musicality on the international stage by becoming the first Korean to win the Musician Award at the 47th La Défense Jazz Competition in 2024. This is the first time in 25 years that a Korean musician has won an award since jazz vocalist Na Yoon-sun received the Jury Special Prize in 1999. She has left a meaningful record as a Korean jazz performer at La Défense, a representative jazz competition in France.
In this broadcast, she will discuss everything from the story of how she changed her study destination from Germany to France, drawn by the music of jazz violin legend Stéphane Grappelli, to the struggles she faced as a classical performer meeting jazz and the process of finding balance between the two genres. Furthermore, she will share how the daily landscapes and experiences she encountered while living in Montmartre, Paris, led to her compositions, and the background of how her music came to be evaluated locally as "like a piece of French art film."
Additionally, the program will cover the process of how she gained attention in the French jazz scene following her win at the La Défense Jazz Competition, and how Son Moeun's original compositions are completed into new music through performances with her members. The broadcast will also look into the music contained in 'MOEUN's' 2nd studio album, which is set for release on September 18, and her future activity plans.
Moreover, viewers can experience the delicate and lyrical music of 'MOEUN' live. The performance will feature Son Moeun, pianist Dexter Goldberg, and guitarist Romain Herbert, playing pieces such as [untranslated title] composed by Son Moeun containing the musical inspiration she received in Paris, [untranslated title] which expresses Place de l'Étoile in Montmartre through music, and [untranslated title] which captures the impression of Fado she first encountered during her trip to Lisbon. Through this live performance, audiences can encounter the unique European jazz of 'MOEUN', where delicate and flowing violin melodies blend with free improvisation.
EBS FM, hosted by baritone Jung Kyung, can be heard every day from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM via EBS FM (104.5MHz in the metropolitan area), EBS internet radio 'Bandi', and the smartphone application 'Bandi'.
