Cellist Park Yoo-shin will appear on the EBS FM "Wednesday Guest Corner" segment of "Jung Kyung's Classic Classic" at 10:00 AM on October 28. Meeting listeners again for the first time in approximately one year, Park will introduce her journey of exploring new repertoires as a performer and her activities as an artistic director for music festivals. During the broadcast, she will perform "Prelude" and "Sarabande" from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 live. She will perform both pieces solo on the cello without piano accompaniment and will discuss her experiences leading music festivals and the process of finding her own musical color.
Performance career following international competition wins
Park Yoo-shin secured second place in both the Anton Rubinstein International Competition and the Janáček International Competition in 2018. Previously, she received second place and a special prize at the Brahms International Competition and took first place at the Dresden University of Music Chamber Music Competition. Her achievements in various competitions drew attention from the European music scene, and she attended the Staatskapelle Dresden Academy in Germany. Since then, she has continued her performance career, collaborating with orchestras both domestically and internationally.
The musical experiences gained during her studies in Germany served as the foundation for Park to develop her unique tone and interpretation. She has released albums reinterpreting vocal works for the cello. Her three released albums include cello versions of Schumann's song cycle "Poet's Love" and Schubert's "Winterreise." The work of translating vocal melodies to the cello is an example of her expanding interest beyond familiar cello repertoire into works from other genres.
The broadcast will cover her performance history and her process of musical interpretation. Park will speak about the influence of her teacher, Emil Rovner, during her studies in Germany, the process of finding her own musical color, and the motivation behind challenging herself with new repertoires.
Reinterpreting works for other instruments with cello and piano
Park Yoo-shin has explored repertoires written for other instruments rather than remaining solely with works written for the cello. This past May, she held a duo recital with pianist Han Ji-ho. The two performers reinterpreted works originally written for instruments such as the clarinet, violin, and flute for the cello and piano. The performance presented works originally intended for different instruments through the arrangement of cello and piano.
During this radio appearance, Park will also discuss the motivation behind seeking out new repertoires. The conversation will include the influence of her teacher Emil Rovner during her time in Germany and the process of creating her own musical identity. Beyond merely repeating familiar works, she will share her experience of translating pieces written for other instruments for the cello. The duo recital with Han Ji-ho in May serves as an example of this repertoire exploration being presented in performance.
She will also share her thoughts on instruments and strings during the broadcast. Park is expected to discuss the process of creating her own sound as a performer and her thoughts regarding instruments and strings. The program will introduce the performer's activities not limited to competition and concert history, but extending to the process of selecting and interpreting repertoire. Park will also convey her activities outside the stage as a musician who balances performing and planning.
Autumn Chamber Music Festival and Pohang International Music Festival
Alongside her performance career, Park Yoo-shin works as an artistic director for music festivals. Since 2019, she has served as the artistic director of the Autumn Chamber Music Festival, conveying the charm of chamber music alongside world-class performers. As both a performer and an artistic director leading festival stages, she continues to compose programs and introduce works. In this broadcast, she will share the experiences gained from operating music festivals and her contemplations as an artistic director.
She also leads the Pohang International Music Festival every year. The theme for this year's festival is "Flow, Beyond the Boundary." During the broadcast, she will introduce the meaning behind this theme and discuss the process of discovering great works to present to the audience. Furthermore, she will share the sense of responsibility and her ambitions as an artistic director in creating the festival in her hometown of Pohang. Through the Autumn Chamber Music Festival and the Pohang International Music Festival, Park plays a role in introducing the direction and programming of the festivals to the audience in addition to her activities as a performer.
Park is expected to talk about the joy of finding great works and presenting them to the audience, along with the experiences felt while leading the festivals. In particular, the sense of responsibility she feels as an artistic director while building the Pohang International Music Festival in her hometown will be included as a topic of the broadcast.
Live performance of two Bach unaccompanied suites
For the live stage of the broadcast, she will perform "Prelude" and "Sarabande" from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1. Both pieces will be played solo on the cello without piano accompaniment. According to broadcast materials, the performance will showcase the structure and delicate expression of Bach's music, as well as Park Yoo-shin's characteristic round and rich tone. On this solo stage, Park will perform the two pieces herself and discuss her process of creating her own sound as a performer.
