The 22nd episode of "Learning AI for the First Time" will air on EBS 1TV at 9:20 AM on Thursday, October 29. Led by Professor Kwon Doo-young, the lesson teaches children how to use AI to turn original ideas into moving characters and digital birthday cards.

EBS will broadcast the 22nd episode of "Learning AI for the First Time," titled "Coding Edition," on Thursday, October 29 at 9:20 AM on EBS 1TV. This lesson focuses on using code provided by AI to create moving characters and using them to design birthday cards to send to friends. While previous coding lessons focused on learning basic principles by running and fixing AI-generated code, this 22nd episode teaches the process of turning original ideas into actual completed works. Children encountering coding for the first time will ask AI questions to resolve curiosities and directly create their own characters and cards.

From executing code to creating personal works

According to EBS, the 22nd episode is the third lecture in the "Coding Edition." In previous lectures, students learned basic coding principles by running and manually modifying code generated by AI. Building on that, this session moves toward designing desired characters and implementing them through code to make them move. The broadcast also introduces how to use the coding results as actual gifts by linking character creation with birthday card making.

This lecture aligns with the expansion of information education in schools. Following the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea's 2022 Revised Curriculum, elementary school information education hours have increased from the previous 17 hours to at least 34 hours. In 2026, 1,141 elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide were selected as AI-focused schools. As opportunities for children to encounter coding and AI in school increase, EBS has structured practical exercises using AI so that even children unfamiliar with coding can follow along. The relevant hours and number of schools are as follows:

Previous elementary information education hours17 hours
2022 Revised Curriculum elementary information education hoursAt least 34 hours
2026 AI-focused schools1,141 schools

AI as a coding teacher that answers questions

The broadcast also addresses difficulties children may face when learning coding for the first time. EBS explains that English, numbers, and symbols used in coding may be unfamiliar, and students might get stuck while inputting code or fail to understand explanations. In these instances, learning continues by asking AI questions and verifying the answers. Students can ask the same question again or request simpler explanations if the initial response is difficult. The broadcast introduces how AI can serve as a coding teacher that answers children's questions.

The lesson also covers how to ask AI for example recommendations suited to one's level or to explain specific parts of code that are not well understood. The curriculum includes a process of not just listening to explanations but immediately executing the learned content to observe the results. When encountering unfamiliar code while adding new functions to a character, students can ask AI for explanations and learn the functions based on the answers. EBS structured the lecture so that children can verify and modify code through dialogue with AI, learning basic coding principles through repeated questioning and execution.

Moving characters for birthday cards

In the lecture, children first design characters of their choosing using code provided by AI. They can change expressions by adjusting shapes, such as increasing face size or widening the distance between eyes. They also add movements, such as the character bouncing around the screen. Through the process of changing the face and eye shapes and adding movement, the character's appearance and actions are refined one by one. When the code is unfamiliar, students complete the character by asking AI for explanations and adding new functions.

The completed characters are used for birthday cards to be sent to friends. Students learn how to insert a friend's name and a message into the code and how to adjust effects, such as falling confetti, as desired. By modifying the text and screen effects, students can create different results, and the broadcast introduces the process of sharing a link to send to friends once finished. EBS extends the lesson to the point of gifting the character within the birthday card. The sequence involves coding the character's movement, adding a name, a congratulatory message, and confetti effects, and then delivering the link.

Instructor Professor Kwon Doo-young continues coding lessons after episode 21

This lecture is led by Professor Kwon Doo-young. Professor Kwon is a professor of Convergence Media at Seoul Media Institute of Technology and works as an artist, programmer, and educator. He earned a PhD in Computer Science from ETH Zurich in Switzerland and a Master's degree in Architectural Design from Washington State University in the United States. He has researched generative AI, new media art, and AI spatial design, and has continued developing creative systems using computer technology and conducting AI project education.

Following the 21st episode, Professor Kwon will lead this lecture to help children encounter coding in an easy and familiar way. Through practical exercises of creating characters and completing birthday cards using AI, EBS intended for children learning coding for the first time to master the process of executing and modifying code. The 22nd episode will be broadcast on EBS 1TV on Thursday, October 29 at 9:20 AM. This broadcast is the third lecture of the "Learning AI for the First Time" Coding Edition.
