On Thursday, October 1, at 9:20 AM, EBS 'Episode 18 – Art Edition' will be broadcast. In this episode, viewers will learn how to express their thoughts by adding AI assistance to their own hand-drawn drawings and how to develop a single drawing into various creative works.

Generative AI enters the art classroom! Expanding children's methods of expression

In art, it is important not only to have the skill to draw proficiently but also to have the experience of freely expressing thoughts and feelings and developing them in various ways. Accordingly, generative AI has recently been used in art classes as a tool to materialize children's thoughts into images and to explore new methods of expression.

In 2025, art classes using image-generating AI were conducted for 101 fifth and sixth-grade students at nine elementary schools nationwide. As a result of conducting a total of nine classes, it was analyzed that classes using AI as a new creative tool increased students' interest and participation and contributed to exploring creative thoughts and new methods of expression. At the same time, it was emphasized that a process is needed to guide students so that they do not simply accept the results made by AI, but instead examine errors and maintain control over the creative process.

Furthermore, in a domestic study applying a 12-session generative AI art education program to fifth-grade elementary students, fluency and originality among creativity improved with statistical significance after the classes. Positive changes also appeared in the area of AI literacy, including the ability to understand and utilize AI principles and AI ethics, showing that it is important to use AI not simply as a tool that produces results, but as a process to develop one's own thoughts.

Hand-drawn sketches become characters! Developing drawings together with AI

In Episode 18, the class begins by drawing directly with paper and colored pencils. After completing the drawing, students show it to the AI and ask how to express it better to better bring out the characteristics of the subject, using the AI's advice to gradually develop their drawings.

They also learn the process of transforming a hand-drawn drawing into a character image. If the initial result is not to their liking, they revise it by specifically telling the AI which characteristics of the original drawing to preserve and what they want to change. Subsequently, they experience the process of a single hand-drawn sketch expanding into various creative works by adding their own experiences and stories to the character to express them as stickers, 4-panel comics, emoticons, etc.

The protagonist of creation is 'Me'! An AI art creation class completed proactively

Following the first art lecture, elementary school teacher Kang Gyeong-uk leads the class. Rather than having AI create results from the beginning, teacher Kang Gyeong-uk focuses on the process where the child looks at their own drawing, decides what they want to add, and then revises it.

In particular, when an image created by AI becomes too different from the original drawing, he shows how to not accept it as is, but to readjust the request or directly indicate the desired parts to make corrections. Through this, he intends to convey that using AI well is not about quickly obtaining wonderful results, but about clearly communicating one's thoughts and examining the results to lead them in the desired direction.
