Court upholds eight-month prison sentence for individual threatening Shin Se-kyung
An appellate court has upheld an eight-month prison sentence for a defendant who posted approximately 450 threatening and insulting messages targeting actress Shin Se-kyung.
The Seoul Eastern District Court dismissed an appeal on the 22nd of last month, upholding an eight-month prison sentence for a defendant who posted approximately 450 threatening and insulting messages targeting actress Shin Se-kyung between June and August 2024.
On the 22nd of last month, the appellate bench of the Seoul Eastern District Court dismissed the appeal of a defendant charged with intimidation and insult, upholding the original sentence of eight months in prison. The defendant was taken into custody immediately following the sentencing.
The defendant is accused of posting approximately 450 threatening and insulting messages targeting actress Shin Se-kyung on online communities over a two-month period from June to August 2024. Some of the posts reportedly included content implying physical harm toward Shin Se-kyung's family.
The court stated that due to the defendant's repeated threats, Shin Se-kyung "had to carry out her activities amidst anxiety and fear." While the defendant appealed for leniency, citing personal circumstances such as depression and remorse, the court determined there was no justifiable motive and no effort made to recover the mental shock and suffering caused to the victim.
Previously, in the first trial held last July, the Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced the defendant to eight months in prison, while the prosecution had sought a two-year sentence. The Present Company has stated it will respond with a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal acts, including threats, slander, defamation, and insults against its artists.
