Professor Seo Kyoung Duk Criticizes Hollywood Actor for Wearing Yukata at K-Culture Event
Hollywood actor Ansel Elgort faced criticism for wearing a traditional Japanese yukata to a K-culture event held at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
Hollywood actor Ansel Elgort is causing controversy after attending a K-culture related event held in Korea while wearing a yukata, a traditional Japanese garment. The event, held on the 2nd at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, was organized to promote Korean lifestyle, culture, and arts.
At the time, the organizers had instructed attendees to follow a cocktail attire dress code, which is semi-formal, but Ansel Elgort did not follow this and instead wore a yukata. His choice of clothing, which failed to consider the cultural context, seems difficult to avoid criticism for undermining the purpose of the event.
Regarding this, Professor Seo Kyoung Duk of Sungshin Women's University strongly criticized, saying, "Appearing specifically in a yukata is an extremely rude act," and added, "His qualities as a global star are questionable." Professor Seo further added, "Regardless of the fact that he is married to a Japanese spouse, dressing appropriately for the time and place is basic etiquette."
