Small inconveniences in daily life become brilliant invention ideas!

The EBS ‘20th Lecture – Invention’ episode will be broadcast on October 15 (Thursday) at 9:20 AM. In this broadcast, viewers will learn how to discover inconveniences in daily life and create invention ideas to solve them with the help of AI. Following the 19th lecture on career exploration, Sim Ha-ru, an elementary school teacher of 10 years who has steadily researched education using AI, will lead the invention lecture for children.

Recently, ideas from elementary school students caught attention as they led to top prizes in actual invention competitions. At the 39th Korea Student Invention Exhibition held last July, Kim Ji-on, a 5th-grade student from Chilcheon Elementary School in Gyeongsangnam-do, won the Presidential Award, surpassing works from middle and high school students. The invention is a ‘Initial Fire Evacuation Breathing Griptok’ that can be used as a breathing protection tool to cover the mouth and nose in the event of a fire, utilizing a griptok attached to a smartphone.

Invention begins not with grand thoughts, but by paying attention to inconveniences in daily life. In this EBS 20th lecture, students will find inconveniences frequently experienced in school life and develop them into invention ideas by thinking of solutions with the help of AI.

You do the thinking! My first invention made with AI

Instructor Sim Ha-ru emphasizes that the most important thing in invention is the experience of thinking for oneself. While it may be convenient if AI provides the answer from the start, it can reduce the child's opportunity to discover problems and contemplate solutions. Therefore, it is important to set rules in advance so that instead of AI providing the answer first, it can develop the student's ideas through questions and advice.

Next, they start from familiar inconveniences, such as a bag that keeps falling from around a desk, and find solutions one by one. By following AI's questions to continue their thoughts, they decide on storage locations and safety devices one by one, and based on this, they concretize the structure and function of the invention.

Once the idea is organized, they sketch the appearance of the invention themselves and explain it in detail so that the AI can understand it. Afterward, based on the sketch, they create an image that looks like a real product and even complete an advertising poster. It is an experience of seeing a thought that started from a small inconvenience transform into a visible invention.

The instructor for this lecture, Sim Ha-ru, is an elementary school teacher who also serves as a Google Certified Innovator, Coach, and Trainer, is a member of the Teacher Creator Association, and is a leader of GEG Sejong. Additionally, she has steadily researched education using digital tools, including co-authoring books.

The EBS ‘20th Lecture - Invention’ episode, where students add their own thoughts and even create the appearance of the invention, will be broadcast on EBS1 on Thursday, October 15 at 9:20 AM and can be rewatched on the EBS website.
