As part of the humanities grand project 'AI Classics, 100 Books That Changed History' incorporating AI technology, EBS has selected Thorstein Veblen's book 'The Theory of the Leisure Class' and will broadcast it on EBS 1TV from Monday, September 7 to Friday, September 18 at 12:05 AM on weekdays. This program consists of a total of 10 episodes, and Professor Noh Myung-woo of the Department of Sociology at Ajou University served as the supervisor to add academic depth.
What is covered in this episode
This series is conducted from a first-person perspective where a 42-year-old Veblen directly lectures by recreating a University of Chicago laboratory from 1899 using AI. It traces how 'The Theory of the Leisure Class,' published 125 years ago, sharply analyzes modern society's luxury consumption, SNS ostentation culture, and university elitism. Veblen demonstrates that 'conspicuous consumption' and 'conspicuous leisure' operate not out of simple necessity, but for comparison and display, explaining the paradox of the luxury market where the more expensive an item is, the better it sells.
