EBS (CEO Kim Yu-yeol) will broadcast a special program on EBS 1TV to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangul Day. As public interest in the original text reaches an all-time high following the movie "Odyssey" surpassing 11 million viewers, EBS will complete the depth of the original text with professional Korean voice dubbing, broadcasting Part 1 on October 3 (Sat) and Part 2 on October 4 (Sun) at 3:35 PM.
A 700-page story that the 172-minute movie could not contain
The movie "Odyssey" compressed the essence of the vast original text into a 172-minute running time. However, it was impossible from the start to capture the entirety of Homer's 《Odysseus》, which spans approximately 700 pages, on screen. The scenes that briefly passed by in the movie—the cave of the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, the songs of the Sirens, the whirlpools of Scylla and Charybdis, the island of the witch Circe, and the spirits guarding the gates of the underworld—each contains a depth and texture that can only be found in the original text. It contains the names and stories of the beings Odysseus met during his 10-year journey home from Troy to Ithaca, and the questions they pose to us today. This is lecture-style content that faithfully reflects the structure and content of the classical original text. It is expected to provide another opportunity for appreciation by looking closely through the original text at the scenes the movie did not choose and the stories of characters the movie processed quickly.
Cumulative YouTube views of 2.57 million, and EBS's response
After the Korean AI dubbing version of the series was released on the EBS Culture YouTube channel on September 7, the reaction exceeded expectations. Within three weeks of release, cumulative views exceeded 2.57 million, and praise poured in, saying, "The value of the license fee has been realized" and "This is what a public broadcaster should do." However, it was not only praise. Viewers' criticisms regarding the AI voice's accent sounding like a specific regional dialect, unnatural pauses, and insufficient pronunciation of certain syllables were sharp, and EBS humbly accepted them. This special broadcast was planned as a response. This is a place where EBS meets viewers again through a completed form achieved through actual dubbing by professional voice actors, rather than Korean voices created by AI.
100th Anniversary of the Establishment of Hangul Day - Bringing World Classics into Our Language
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangul Day. EBS believes this special broadcast aligns with that significance. It is based on the judgment that conveying Homer's 《Odysseus》 across thousands of years into our language is something a public broadcaster can do.
EBS series Part 1 will be specially broadcast on EBS 1TV on October 3 (Sat) and Part 2 on October 4 (Sun), both at 3:35 PM, and can be rewatched on the EBS website.
