Theatre Bomnal to stage Lee Kang-baek's play 'Simcheong' on October 29
Theatre Bomnal is returning to the stage with Lee Kang-baek's play 'Simcheong' at the Traveler Theater, marking its first revival in nine years.
Theatre Bomnal is bringing Lee Kang-baek's play 'Simcheong' back to the stage for the first time in nine years. The production is scheduled to open on October 29 at the Traveler Theater, following its original 2016 premiere and a 2017 encore performance.
Actor Song Heung-jin, who received the acting award at the 4th Seoul Theater Artists Awards for playing the role of 'Seon-ju' in 2017, will return to perform the same role in this production. The play has also been selected for the Arts Council Korea '2026 Excellent Creative Performance Rerun Support.' As a rerun production, the performance is expected to serve as an opportunity to verify both the completeness of the work and its potential for reinterpretation.
The play does not follow the familiar narrative of the "filial daughter Simcheong" that is widely known. Instead, it unfolds the story through 'Gan-nan,' who was sold as a sacrifice, and the elderly 'Seon-ju,' exploring life, death, and human choice. By modernizing the classic folktale to question the human condition, the production is expected to provide the audience with a sense of both familiarity and estrangement.
